I’ve created this Essential 🚩 7-Step Guide (which takes around 20–30 minutes to complete) for people interested in becoming an Online English Teacher on Preply. If you follow everything below closely, including the mini-guides for each step, you will certainly be accepted and can start teaching within a week.

Upon completing this guide, your tutor profile will look similar to Chelsea’s

Please take special note of coming back here to this application guide, after submitting your application, to complete the mandatory 🚩 Step 7 since we are currently prioritizing English native speakers.

🚩 STEP 1: SIGN UP

Click this link to start your teaching application.

🚩 STEP 2: ABOUT

Fill in your details in the ‘About’ section.

Even though native English speakers can charge significantly higher rates, in order to quickly get accepted you should initially use the recommended low hourly rate (which is an average for non-native English tutors). This is a hack I discovered while doing my own application. However, once you are accepted, you can increase your rate to US$20 per hour since native English speakers can command a significantly higher rate than non-native ones. As you start acquiring some positive reviews, you slowly increase your hourly rate to US$30 per hour (or even more if students love your classes!)

🚩 STEP 3: PROFILE PHOTO

Upload a profile photo. Read detailed PHOTO guidelines here.

Common mistakes: bad quality photo; not professional;

🚩 STEP 4: PROFILE DESCRIPTION

Write a profile description (minimum 100 words). Read detailed DESCRIPTION guidelines here.

Example headlines:

-Build your future: I will make you fluent in English with personalized lessons
-Native English speaker from New York University
-High Level Business English/Standard American English Accent

Moreover, you can view some examples of successful applicants for the language you intend to teach by looking at the video and application examples here: bit.ly/teacher-profile-examples

Here is a Successful Template Framework you can use to write your own profile description:

*Greet the reader (potential students)*
*Introduce yourself in 1 sentences*
*If applicable, write which university you are from and which degree you are pursuing and/or have graduated with*
*Write 1 sentence about why you want to tutor English online*
*If you have any experience teaching, write 1 sentence about that here*
*If you have any teaching certificates, mention them here*
*Mention if you can teach kids as well as adults, or only adults*
*Mention what the main focus of your lessons could be (improving grammar, business conversation, day-to-day communication, correcting pronunciation, discussing different topics in English etc.)*
*Mention why students should choose you to be their tutor here*
*Add a “Call-To-Action” inviting students to book a lesson with you, or to message with any questions*

Common mistakes: grammar;

🚩 STEP 5: INTRODUCTION VIDEO

Record a video (at least 30s, no more than 2min). Read detailed VIDEO guidelines here.

Strictly follow the guidelines above. You can view some example videos here: bit.ly/teacher-profile-examples

For this video, you can follow the same template as in the one you write in the Description (Step 4) but do not read off the screen.

Common mistakes: bad resolution/lightning;

🚩 STEP 6: AVAILABILITY

We recommend setting as much availability as possible, so that you can secure your first lessons and reviews as soon as possible.

🚩 STEP 7: MANDATORY CONFIRMATION

It is mandatory for you to take 10 seconds and fill out this confirmation form after you have submitted your application since we are currently prioritizing English native speakers: bit.ly/mandatory-confirmation-form

🏁 CONGRATULATIONS! You’ve Reached The Finish Line!

When you start teaching, payments for your earnings as a teacher can be done via several options such as directly into your bank account or to a digital wallet like PayPal.

The deadline to submit your application (including all 7 steps) is Sunday, January 31, 2021 at 11:59pm Pacific Time.

If you have any further questions about the application process or technical issues (e.g. video upload) please contact support@preply.com.

We wish you a successful application process.
